Cobberdogs require regular brushing and professional grooming. We provide coat guidance and begin gentle grooming exposure early to support a positive experience.

Grooming an Australian Cobberdog

One of the wonderful characteristics of the Australian Cobberdog is its beautiful, soft, low-shedding coat. While the coat is designed to be easy to live with, it does require regular grooming to keep it healthy, comfortable and free from mats.

Daily to Weekly Care

Brushing (2–3 times per week)
Most Australian Cobberdogs benefit from a thorough brush two to three times each week. This helps to:

  • Prevent knots and matting

  • Remove loose hair and debris

  • Keep the coat looking soft and healthy

  • Distribute natural oils throughout the coat

Dogs with longer coats or very active outdoor lifestyles may need brushing more frequently.

Bathing

Bath your Cobberdog approximately every 4–8 weeks, or sooner if they become dirty. Always use a high-quality dog shampoo and conditioner designed for coat health.

Professional Grooming

Most Australian Cobberdogs visit a professional groomer every 6–8 weeks, depending on the length of coat you prefer.

A professional groom typically includes:

  • Bath and blow dry

  • Full brush and de-matting (if required)

  • Clipping and styling

  • Nail trimming

  • Ear cleaning

  • Hygiene trim around the face, feet and sanitary areas

Coat Length

Many families choose to keep their Cobberdog in a practical "teddy bear" clip, making home maintenance much easier. Longer coats are beautiful but require more frequent brushing and regular professional grooming.

Ears

Australian Cobberdogs have drop ears, so regular ear care is important.

  • Check ears weekly.

  • Keep the ear canal free of excessive hair if recommended by your groomer or veterinarian.

  • Clean ears monthly, weekly at the most, always using a gentle ear cleaner, such as KLEO SOLUTION.

  • Never use olive oil, vinegar or regular shampoo to clean the ears.

Nails

Nails should be checked every 3–4 weeks and trimmed as needed. If you can hear your dog's nails clicking on hard floors, they're usually due for a trim.

Teeth

Good dental health is essential.

  • Brush your dog's teeth several times each week (daily is ideal).

  • Provide appropriate dental chews and regular veterinary dental checks.

Introducing Grooming Early

At Shorebreak Pals, we begin gentle grooming experiences from an early age. Our puppies are introduced to:

  • Brushing

  • Bathing

  • Blow dryer sounds

  • Nail handling

  • Face and paw trimming

  • Standing calmly on a grooming table

These early positive experiences help puppies grow into confident adults who enjoy being groomed.

Please note: Although the Australian Cobberdog is a low-shedding breed, low shedding does not mean maintenance-free.
